Why does the end of February always seem to sneak up on me? 28 days just don’t seem like enough for the month of love, am I right?!
Speaking of love, this month’s Women Who Wow boss babe feature is one of our own, Kelly Lofgren. Kelly is a licensed interior designer with big flare and an even bigger heart. When we’re buried under fabric samples and CAD drawings, Kelly offers her comedic relief and occasional impromptu vocal performances to lighten the mood. Our team is surely made brighter with her presence. Check out our interview with Kelly below. We know you’ll dig her as much as we do.
1. Elevator speech. Go!
My name is Kelly and I am a Senior Designer at Anne Rue Interiors. I have been doing Interior Design for about 5 years now, including Hospitality projects, Commercial Projects and of course, Residential Design, which is ultimately where my heart is. I have had my NCIDQ for about a year now, which was something I worked very hard to obtain (it’s not an easy exam nor is it cheap!!). My passion for design and meticulous attention to detail shows through in everything I do – from presentations to space planning to FF&E selections and all of the in-between. I think design needs to be well thought out, practical and of course, beautiful. I pride myself in always working towards making a company better, stronger, and more successful.
2. What were you doing prior to design and what inspired you to make the leap?
I have wanted to be an Interior Designer since I was little… I just didn’t realize I could do it for a living until I was about halfway through college at UCF. I finished out my first degree there, because I had a scholarship and didn’t want to waste it. Then, as cheesy as this sounds, I saw a commercial for IADT one afternoon, ya know – between shifts at my local Pier 1 Imports and watching crappy day time television (before Netflix!!!) – and decided to start classes! It was the best thing I ever did for myself. I am so lucky to be able to wake up every day knowing that I absolutely love what I do. I look forward to the challenges that I face during the design process and being able to use what I continue to learn every day to tackle work through them.
3. What is your favorite design trend?
I am currently REALLY in to Vintage & Kilim Rugs! I think they make a space look super rich and unique.
4. What is your daily mantra?
YA GOTTA WANT IT. Always has been and always will be!
5. What is one piece of advice you would give to new designers hoping to land a position at a design firm?
This industry is not for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of hard work and determination to just get through the coursework, let alone the industry fresh out of college. TAKE ON INTERNSHIPS!!! Free or paid – JUST DO IT. Figure out a way to make it happen! IT’S ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW! You never who you will meet and who may be able to help you out in the future. Be kind, be respectful, be positive, be eager to learn and grow. Be open to working in a team environment – collaboration is key to great design.
As always, stay inspired.
